America's Veterans,..

AMERICA'S NEW GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP

AMERICA'S VETERANS

BY SGT. KEVIN BENDERMAN

The men and women who decide to join this nation's military should not be treated like pack mules that are cast aside because they are no longer useful to the service.  They are people who, for whatever reason, decided to take the oath as a soldier, sailor, marine,  or airman and serve in this nation's military.  Most of the people in the military today are from what is called the middle class, or below, of the imaginary social, financial and political strata this land of equality has developed over the years.  When I hear of the VA budget cuts to veterans, or the recent amputee veterans from this latest military excursion being charged for their meals at a VA hospital, I get extremely angry.  This is especially troubling when you see our government sending billions of dollars to every other country in the world while it neglects our own.

Why do the people who have given the most to this country get treated the most shabbily?  There are veterans all over America who have been forgotten while we set the climate where people who play games or act in movies make millions.  Americans would like to say this is a problem for the government to solve while we sit back and watch the game or the movie, not even hesitating to pay the exorbitant price of admission.

Americans are going to have to break out of their apathy and start helping ensure that our government does the right thing by these veterans and active duty people who have done and continue to do what so many of the privileged among us refuse to do.  If you are a person in America who has benefited from the sacrifice of a person who has served in this country's military with honor, then it is your responsibility to give back to the veterans and their families, because if it weren't for those veterans, you probably would not have been able to achieve the success in your businesses that you now enjoy,  watch the movies that now entertain you, or run on the fields of the games you participate in.

There are thousands of veterans being neglected over the treatment they require, whether it be physical, psychological, emotional or any combination of the above.  Are we going to demand they receive just compensation for their sacrifice, or will we, as a nation that has benefited greatly from their sacrifice, continue to allow them to receive sub-standard care, and to be forgotten by the wayside?  It is your choice America.  What will it be?
